Marriage And Social Media Marketing

Julien’s muse about starting over, got me thinking a tad. In his post ‘Why Start Over‘ he asks if  its worthwhile for a partner to uproot him/herself and re-locate to another place for the other.  One thing he said in particular really got me sitting up:

Wherever you go, you have to start over, from scratch.

It takes years to rebuild any kind of meaningful relationships.

Bingo Julien! Without perhaps intending it, you gave away the most precious lesson in social media marketing. Infact, just recently on Twitter I said:

Tweet on Marriage

The kind of time, energy and resource commitment required for social media marketing is exactly what it takes to make a marriage work. Or vice versa, since marriage came first!

So while casual dating is about not returning calls, marriage is about sending those extra messages that add fun and love to the connection. Ditto with social media marketing. Each touchpoint, each conversation initiated adds to the depth of the relationship.

While casual dating is about pulling out all your stunts to get that one chance at intimacy, marriage is about creating – slowly yet surely – sustainable moments of intimate joy.

I could go on and on drawing parellels:

indifference vs. commitment

head vs. heart

short-term vs. long-term

closed and sly vs. open and honest.

Of course, the married ones will tell you its not always smooth-sailing, as it is with social media – it can mean exposing your dark, unpleasant side, confessing your mistakes, renewing old vows, and laughing it off from time to time.

While the casual stuff can ‘work’ its the serious stuff thats worth writing home about.

Its a natual, human desire: wanting to be in relationships for the long haul.

With social media, businesses now have the chance to fulfil that.

Good one Puja, trust you to draw such analogies. From my experince in branding, you’re right: good brands and their customers do have a long standing relationship. Look fwd to more pieces like this…
