#moonfruit Offers Insights For Marketers
Jul
Anyone active on Twitter will have known about this by now. #moonfruit has been number 1 on Twitter’s trending topics for a couple of days. The reasons for this aren’t many, just one: Apple.
Moonfruit, an unknown name till June ‘09 has suddenly become all the rage for one simple and smart choice they made: they brought Apple into the picture. Free at that! For the uninitiated, Moonfruit, as their 10th Anniversary celebrations, are offering?10 Macbook Pros over 10 days. Whats’s the catch: Your tweet needs to include the #moonfruit hashtag (my tweet at the bottom, for kicks). Winners will be picked randomly. Here are my thoughts:
-
The real winner is Apple
I thought I was the only one frustrated with my PC, but clearly there are loads of people who’d like to own a Mac. I doubt there are many moonfruit fans out there, but Macbook fans – hmmm. Over the years Macs have come to be associated with 1) a delightful user experience (who doesn’t want a piece of that?) and 2) coolness, a label everyone wants to own. Moonfruit’s contest is the closest some will propbably get to that reality. -
Sometimes being a facilitator is good enough
Moonfruit, whether by design or otherwise, played this one well. They simply put themselves between people and their desire to own Macbooks and look at all the buzz generated. While as marketers we understand that stunts make for weak brand connections, the fact that thousands are suddenly aware of Moonfruit’s existence is commendable. If that’s what they wanted anyway. -
KISS works – every single time
I’m not sure it was meant to be a campaign in the first place but it sure turned out to be. ?The offer was simple, honest yet talkable making the viral vector work wondefully (in fact some people are already fed-up with the buzz). This demonstrates that no matter how good the story (Free give-aways) sounds, the content (10 Macbook Pros) should be worth talking about too.
My 2 cents. What are your thoughts?
